In its ongoing quest to visit barbershops throughout the world, a popular television series made a stop in Blenheim on Tuesday.
The Global Barber, hosted by Cedric Small, was in town with its film crew to profile the Black Comb Barbershop on Talbot Street West.
Now in his second season, The Global Barber features Small, a barber for 20 years, chatting with other barbers about current styling trends, along with visits to various attractions, restaurants and breweries in the community being featured.
“We’re just showing other barbershops, the lifestyle, the area,” Small said. “We try to showcase the town. I like the small-town feel (of Blenheim). It’s well looked after, … I could live here, retire. Nice little spot.”
The show has visited such countries as France, Germany and the United States, as well places across Canada.
Small is based in St. Catharines and is the master barber at The Headshop.
He said the pandemic has taken a toll on his industry, but added it’s been faring well since provincial restrictions were lifted on personal care businesses.
“The ones that are still open, they struggled, but they’re good barbershops,” Small said. “I think all the barbers help each other out together. It’s been tough, for sure.”
Gregory Dennis, the master barber at Black Comb, called the filming a great opportunity for the business, as well as for Blenheim itself, to be in the spotlight.
“It’s surreal actually,” he said. “It’s a good feeling.”
Dennis noted his own barbering style is a mix between traditional and contemporary. Clients come from across Southwestern Ontario to his shop, he added.
“I have strong influences from Europe and I also have strong ties to 1950s classic barbering,” he said. “It’s more than just a haircut. I think it’s the experience. I think it’s something special that we offer here that other people don’t quite have.”
As for his rapport with clients, he said the business is almost like a “barbershop confessional.”
Dennis admitted the pandemic has been challenging, calling the lack of consistency concerning public-health measures to be particularly frustrating for business owners and those seeking services.
However, he said things have settled down for the most part in recent months.
Black Comb also has a location in St. Thomas, where the filming crew also visited. Small expects the new season will air some time early next year.
